Vein Closure "Varicose & Spider Vein" Treatment in Columbia & Baltimore, MD

It is estimated that nearly 25% of women and 15% of men suffer from lower extremity venous insufficiency and associated visible Varicose Veins.  Varicose Veins, and Spider Veins are usually a symptom of Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), a disease that causes blood to flow backward in the veins causing them to bulge and twist down the leg.  Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) can occur throughout the venous system, but occurs most frequently in the great saphenous vein, small saphenous vein and other veins of the superficial venous system in the lower legs.  Primary risk factors include heredity, gender, pregnancy, lifestyle and age.  Most patients experience long-standing leg symptoms that compromise their daily routines.  Without varicose vein treatment, these symptoms can progress to a lifestyle limiting condition.

Traditionally, varicose vein treatment has been painful surgery such as ligation and stripping.  Now, varicose vein laser treatments such as endovenous laser ablation, EVLT and VNUS Closure provide a proven, minimally-invasive alternative that allows patients to return to their everyday lives immediately.  If you are considering treatment options to safely and effectively treat your varicose veins, Endovenous Laser Ablation (or EVLT)  may be right for you.  You owe it to yourself to undergo a vein screening by a qualified vein specialist.

HOW ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION WORKS

During the endovenous laser ablation (or EVLT) procedure, a laser fiber is activated inside and along the length of your faulty  vein.  The laser energy damages the vein walls, shrinking them closed so that blood can no longer flow through.

IDEAL CANDIDATES FOR ENDOVENOUS LASER VEIN ABLATION

If you see spider or varicose veins on your legs, experience leg pain, cramping, leg or ankle swelling, burning or itching of the skin and/or a "heavy feeling" in  your legs, you may be a candidate for endovenous laser ablation (or EVLT).  In addition, if you have previously been diagnosed with varicose veins, venous insufficiency or venous reflux and have tried other treatments (stripping, sclerotherapy, or compression) you owe it to yourself to schedule a free vein assessment with Dr. Banda to find out if you're a candidate for endovenous laser ablation.  At MD Laser Medicine & Surgery, Dr. Banda will perform a comprehensive evaluation of your varicose veins, which will  include a physical examination and an ultrasound to help determine whether venous reflux disease is causing your varicose vein symptoms and whether you are a candidate for endovenous laser ablation.

To get started, take the self-assessment quiz below and call the office for a free vein assessment.

4. Have you previously had skin ulcers on the leg (or areas that were slow to heal)?

WHAT TO EXPECT

Endovenous laser ablation (or EVLT) is an office procedure tha is performed on an outpatient basis.  Using ultrasound, Dr. Banda will position the closure catheter into the diseased vein through a small opening in the skin. A tiny laser fiber is then passed through the catheter. The fiber delivers laser energy to the vein wall.  As the laser energy is delivered and the catheter is withdrawn, the vein wall is heated, causing the collagen in the wall to shrink and the vein to close. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood is re-routed to other healthy veins.

RECOVERY TIME

Following the endovenous laser ablation (or EVLT) procedure, you can expect to be back to work the same day and resuming many of your normal activities. A bandage is placed over the insertion site and compression stockings are worn to aid healing. Dr. Banda will require you to walk immediately following the procedure and refrain from extended standing and strenuous activities for a period of time.

RESULTS

Clinical data with up to five years of follow-up show endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) success rates of 95-98%.  This is much higher than surgical ligation and stripping and other varicose vein treatments.  Market researchers predict that based on its safety and effectiveness, laser vein treatments such as endovenous laser ablation and VNUS Closure will soon become the new 'gold standard.'
