IDEAL CANDIDATES FOR SMARTLIPO™ Ideal candidates for Smartlipo™ are in good health and close to their target body weight. Because Smartlipo™ is a body contouring procedure--and not a weight loss treatment--it is best for patients with areas of localized fat that will not respond to diet and exercise. That said, patients can be moderately overweight and still be considered good candidates for the procedure. At MD Laser Medicine & Surgery, Dr. Banda often uses Smartlipo™ as an adjunct to other treatments and procedures to achieve safe and effective fat reduction. In fact, Dr. Banda often uses Smartlipo™ to refine results of concomitantly performed traditional liposuction for a select group of patients who would otherwise not be candidates for laser-assisted liposuction. AREAS TREATABLE WITH SMARTLIPO™ Smartlipo™ was designed as a stand-alone procedure to remove localized areas of unwanted fat on most any area of the face and body, including the neck, chin, arms, back, abdomen, hips, thighs, flanks (love handles), male breasts (gynecomastia) and other areas where unwanted fat, loose or flabby skin persist. When creatively used in conjunction with suction assisted liposuction (SAL), power assisted liposuction (PAL) or ultrasound assisted liposuction (UAL), Smartlipo™ can be used to treat much larger areas as part of liposculpture. HOW SMARTLIPO™ IS PERFORMED At MD Laser Medicine & Surgery, Smartlipo™ is performed exclusively by Dr. Banda, using local tumescent anesthesia. Tumescent is an anesthetic technique pioneered three decades ago that is safely used the world over. During Smartlipo™, the patient is awake for the duration of the procedure. A large volume of a dilute mixture of saline (or other similar fluid) and Lidocaine (or Novocaine) is infused into the treatment area(s). The laser is then inserted through several small incisions in the skin and into fat pockets. The laser is moved back and forth in a fanning motion just below the skin to break up, liquefy and destroy the fat cells. This is followed by suctioning out of the fat in the manner of traditional liposuction. It is the use of the laser during the procedure that also provides the added benefit of tightening the overlying skin by stimulating new collagen formation over several months. RECOVERY TIME Each patient's recovery time will vary based on the extent of the procedure, but generally, most patients can safely return to work within approximately 48 hours following Smartlipo™. At the very least, we strongly advise taking the next day off work, but to walk and resume normal activity. Majority of patients will experience minimal brusing and swelling for the first 24 hours, which will peak between days 3 and 5 following the procedure. A compression garment is used for several weeks followiing the procedure to help reduce swelling and mould the body into the targeted new shape. RESULTS Following Smartlipo™, an improved appearance in body shape can be seen immediately, with continued improvement for six to 12 months following the procedure. Conversely, the skin tightening benefit of Smartlipo™ will be gradual and noticeable over time. With a sensible weight management program and exercise regimen, your new, more pleasing silohuette is permanent with Smartlipo™. Our current scientific understanding is that once puberty is reached, no new fat cells develop. Fat cells either swell or shrink in size depending on weight gain or loss. Therefore, the fat cells that are removed from a treated area during Smartlipo™, do not return. However, worth noting is that not all fat cells are removed during the procedure.
