Microlaser Peels Treatment in Columbia & Baltimore, MD
A Laser Peel is a minimal to full epidermal peel performed using laser technology to precisely remove the outermost layers of the skin. The procedure is individually tailored to the nature of a particular skin condition, which may include facial wrinkles, acne, age and sun scars, keratoses, active acne and pigmentation problems. Laser Peels are typically performed using an ablative resurfacing laser such Sciton (on its Profile Contour platform). At MD Laser Medicine & Surgery, Dr. Banda utilizes the Sciton laser to safely and effectively administer Laser Peels.
Laser Peels are most suited for lighter skin types. However, clinical studies indicate that with careful protocols, Laser Peel treatment can be designed for use in some darker skin types. Dr. Banda has safely and effectively performed Laser Peels on Asian and lighter shades of African-American skin types with superior results.
LASER PEEL VS. MICRODERMABRASION AND CHEMICAL PEELS
Generally, microdermabrasion only removes the outermost layer (stratum corneum, 10-15 microns) of the skin. A deep chemical peel can remove slightly more. A single Laser Peel, however, is the equivalent of five to 10 combinations of microdermabrasions and chemical peels as a minimal to full epidermal peel (up to 60 microns). It offers dramatically better results than microdermabrasion or any chemical peel can offer with minimal downtime.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Prior to your Laser Peel, a topical anesthetic is applied and allowed to take effect for 30 to 45 minutes. For some patients, the option for an injectable local anesthetic, pain medication and anti-anxiety medication is available, though not necessary or required.
Immediately following a Laser Peel, you will feel as if you have a bad sunburn. This feeling typically lasts for several hours following the procedure followed by minor sloughing of the skin and itchiness the following day.
RECOVERY TIME
Recovery time varies from patient to patient, but will generally take two to four days. Most patients at MD Laser Medicine & Surgery opt to have their Laser Peels performed on a Thursday or Friday so they may return to work the following Monday. Dr. Banda will prescribe an ointment such as Aquaphor or Vaseline that should be used, per his instructions, as a barrier to keep the air away from your skin during the healing process.
RESULTS
Smoother, clearer and healthier more vibrant-looking skin is the result you can expect following a Laser Peel. You will notice a more significant and immediate change in skin texture and tightness as compared to microdermabrasion or a chemical peel. The results of a single Laser Peel can be sufficient to last at least six to12 months and additional treatments can be performed as required. A series of treatments may be best for some patients depending on skin condition and available recovery time. During your complimentary consultation, Dr. Banda will devise an individualized treatment protocol designed especially to help you achieve your desired results.
