Laser Medicine and Surgery is fast becoming a medical specialty in its own right–and, we, at MD Laser Medicine & Surgery, have embraced it. Our focus is the use of medical lasers to treat a variety of medical conditions in a non-invasive or minimally-invasive manner. This practice model, therefore, transcends the traditional catergorization of the practice of medicine. Dr. Banda is a specialist in the treatment of several different conditions whose unifying factor is the use of lasers for their treatment. Smartlipo™ , for example, can be categorized under cosmetic dermatology, cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery. Endovenous Laser Ablation of veins, on the other hand, under phlebology and vascular surgery. To adequately evaluate and treat the different conditions, a laser surgeon has to train and acquire competence in the evaluation and treatment of all the different diseases and conditions amenable to laser treatment. We have this training and competence.

The majority of our laser procedures are used to treat skin conditions associated with what is otherwise normal aging such as sun damage and wrinkles. Phototherapy or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is particularly suited for the treatment of skin pigmentary changes such as dark sun spots, rosecea and other skin discolorations. Fractional resurfacing will treat fine wrinkles, sun damage, large pores and generally rejuvenate the skin to retard the signs of aging. Incidentally, acne scars and rosecea are considered pathological and not merely cosmetic issues for purposes of medical insurance. This distinction does get blurred when a patient comes in for what was thought to be a cosmetic issue but upon taking a history and after examination, Dr. Banda determines the need for pathological examination. At MD Laser Medicine & Surgery, we always first obtain a biopsy before proceeding with cosmetic treatment. These biopsies are performed in our office for most health insurance plans. Indeed, we have had occasions when patients end up on a non cosmetic treatment pathway after such a biopsy. 

Endovenous laser ablation of veins and Smartlipo™ are both minimally invasive procedures. These are performed in our surgical suite which is appropriately outfitted as an outpatient operating room. Although some of our patients seek the treatment of varicose veins because they are unsightly, the majority have symptoms of venous insufficiency. Left untreated chronic venous insufficiency does cause significant reduction in quality of life and disability. To provide comprehensive vein care, we have partnered with AngioDynamics  and their Venacure program for endovenous laser therapy, several surface lasers for the treatment of spider veins, and a comprehensive sclerotherapy program using both Asclera (polidocanol) and Sotradecol (sodium tetradecyl sulfate).
