Laser Fractional Resurfacing in Columbia & Baltimore, MDPopularly known as "Fractional Resurfacing," ablative fractional resurfacing is the latest technology in laser skin resurfacing. Unfortunately, there is still some confusion among patients about the difference between ablative fractional resurfacing and non-ablative fractional resurfacing, which is a different technology. Non-ablative fractional resurfacing has no downtime, but requires several sessions to show results, which are much less impressive than ablative fractional resurfacing. At MD Laser Medicine & Surgery, Dr. Banda specializes in ablative fractional resurfacing. Whereas traditional full skin resurfacing procedures have required weeks of recovery, ablative fractional resurfacing has a much shorter downtime. Designed for the improvement of the overall appearance of skin, ablative fractional resurfacing uses a laser microbeam to create thousands of pinpoint areas on the skin. Because only a fraction of the skin is directly treated with the laser, healing time is quick and downtime is much shorter than traditional resurfacing procedures of the past. CONDITIONS TREATABLE WITH ABLATIVE FRACTIONAL RESURFACING Fractional resurfacing can improve a wide variety of skin conditions, but is most commonly used most for the treatment of:
HOW ABLATIVE FRACTIONAL RESURFACING WORKS Fractional lasers use laser energy to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin which are surrounded by areas of healthy, untreated skin. The zones of untreated skin invigorate the body's natural healing process, while the treated areas stimulate production of new collagen, plumping up the skin and smoothing out wrinkles, lines, scars and other skin irregularities. HOW FRACTIONAL RESURFACING IS PERFORMED Most fractional resurfacing laser procedures done today are performed in the physician's office. At MD Laser Medicine & Surgery, Dr. Banda performs fractional resurfacing in our designated procedure suite and uses Sciton's Profractional laser. The ProFractional is an erbium laser which offers distinct advantages over the CO2 laser. It can be used on more skin types and is unlikely to cause pigment discolorations, for example. The procedure will take 15 - 30 minutes depending on the condition being addressed and the size of the area treated. Allow for time prior to the procedure for anesthetic cream which takes about 45 minutes to an hour to take effect. An injectable local anesthetic may also be used. TREATMENT PROTOCOL Fractional resurfacing is typically a single, one-time treatment. However, in consult with Dr. Banda, a series of up to 3-4 treatments, spaced 6-8 weeks apart may be appropriate, depending on your needs and how much downtime you can afford. Dr. Banda will personalize a treatment plan based on the level of improvement you desire. For even better results, he often combines fractional resurfacing with a laser peel. RECOVERY TIME Immediately following the procedure you will experience redness, resembling sunburn. Complete healing typically requires about 3-7 days and most patients can apply makeup and get back to work within 3-4 days after the treatment. It is important to follow all post-procedure physician instructions, which may include some skin care products and instructions on how to use them. Your skin will be more sensitive to ultra-violet light after the procedure, and so it is important to avoid direct sun exposure until fully healed. Indeed your future skin care should include regular use of a sun block of at least SPF 30. Schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Banda today to learn more about Fractional Resurfacing. You will be glad you did.
